Caribeno guide Dennys Williams caught this beauty - normally it's strictly catch & release for the tarpon, but this fish was hooked deep and wound up being a feast for quite a few locals.
At certain times of year schools of tarpon cruise the black sand beach which borders the village, getting close enough for shore anglers to catch.
This beach is also an extremely important nesting site for the green turtle, as well as the massive leatherback. Emilio Williams is also a licensed guide for turtle tours.
The village of Tortuguero lies on Costa Rica's Caribbean coast. The townsite is nestled between the Caribbean sea and an extensive canal system through Tortuguero National Park, where howler monkeys put on a daily morning show, caiman and crocodiles lurk beneath the surface, and raucous parrots and colourful toucans are often seen. The five-mile long beach on the Caribbean side of the village is not just a nice place to enjoy a beautiful sunrise walk or a cooling swim at sunset - it's also a very important nesting site for the green sea turtle. In short, Tortuguero is a paradise for nature lovers.
It's also a paradise for anglers. Tortuguero offers great fresh and brackish water fishing - where you can catch mojarra (black bass), guapote (rainbow bass), snook, fat snook, various jacks, including jack crevalle and of course the ocean, teeming with snook, barracuda, jack crevalle and mackerel and where you've got an excellent shot at the Silver King, that greatest of all game fish: Tarpon!
The Williams family has been fishing the waters of Tortuguero for more than twenty-five years. Owner Emilio Williams was born here, as were his sons Dennys & Tony, who are probably more at home on the water than they are on land. They provide an excellent fishing experience that will be remembered for a lifetime.
For those who would like to experience a taste of typical Costa Rican village life, safe and friendly Tortuguero has it all. You can be a little "off the track" (literally - there are no roads or cars here!), yet everything you need is at hand. There are charming locally-owned places to stay, several restaurants to suit different tastes, and a variety of cheerful shops where unique and unusual Costa Rican handicrafts and artwork are available. It's a place where everyone still says "hola" with a smile.
